This wheel is used to turn the mill's cap (connected to the capstan) into the wind.
Note the brake pole from which the brake chain hangs down.

This room is located just below the cap. the (moving) wheel is driven by the mill's sails,
it is used to hoist bags of grain.

This (moving) gearwheel (located two floors below the cap) is used to drive up to three grinding units,
which are located one floor lower (next panorama), connected through three thick vertical wooden shafts.
More information about the inner workings of the Dutch windmill can be found here (F. Stokhuyzen), here and here.

The three grinding units, located at the same level as the balcony.
One of the units is dismantled to show the grinding stone.

These panoramas were made in the Netherlands. Equipment used was a Minolta 7D DSLR in combination with a Sigma 8mm fisheye (and sometimes with a Sigma 12-24 @12mm). Since April'08 I am using a Nikon D60 with a Nikon 10.5 mm fisheye. Camera was mount on a tripod with a Nodal Ninja 3 panoramic head. Stitching was done by Hugin in combination with Enblend.

Much information about Dutch windmills can be found on

How did the Greek build their windmills? Have a look at some panoramas.
